SUMMARY:Joshua Burnell
DESCRIPTION:Like an intergalactic troubadour who crash-landed last century\, Joshua Burnell makes retro chamber pop for the modern world. \n \nFresh off the back of a UK tour including a growing number of sold out dates\, Burnell is unleashing his second tour and album this year: Condor Keep & Other Stories. \n \nBorn in France\, but raised on the move\, including years in Linlithgow\, Kendal and Yorkshire\, the eclecticism of Joshua’s influences mirrors this restless movement. There are shades of 70s rock\, singer-songwriter folk and classical sophistication drawn together with a bookish edge. His music has been compared to The Decemberists\, Al Stewart and The Observer wrote: “much of it would fit comfortably in a Peter Gabriel-era Genesis set.” His show feels like poring over an anthology of otherworldly tales yet with the flamboyance and emotion of a stadium rock show. \n \nSensitive to the social challenges we all face in today’s age\, Joshua creates universes to offer both a temporary escape but also to reflect today’s injustices through his characters and stories with the understanding that bringing people together is the remedy. The standing ovation he received at Fairport’s Cropredy Convention amongst numerous festivals is testament that people are starting to connect with this relentlessly creative artist. \n \nThe Escape From Condor Keep Tour spans across the UK and Europe\, with some dates already sold out – one of them (aptly) a medieval keep in the Netherlands. Having received the thumbs up from BBC Radio 2’s Mark Radcliffe\, and backed by a stellar 5-piece band\, Joshua Burnell is not one to miss. \n \n \nLinks\nwww.joshuaburnell.co.uk \n

SUMMARY:Gia Ford
DESCRIPTION:How often do we hear from the outsider’s perspective? For rising new artist Gia Ford\, those figures on the fringes of society are by far the most fascinating. \nHer songs tell the stories of the downtrodden to the downright dangerous. And through them\, we begin to hear familiar\, uncomfortable truths about ourselves. \n \nRaised between Sheffield and Cheshire after her parents divorced\, Ford developed an early passion for both poetry and original songs. “I’ve always loved writing creatively\, and poetry is something I do for my own pleasure\,” she says. “The two come together quite naturally\, to the point that I end up writing these short stories that happen to be set to music.” This culminated in her spectacular debut album\, Transparent Things\, which was released in 2024 and is a collection of songs that demonstrates Ford’s signature Sheffield swagger\, burnished with nods to alt-pop and psychedelic sleaze. Most of all\, her debut album shows how Ford is able to craft songs like no other artist of her generation. \n \nSpeaking about her writing style\, Ford said “I think there’s a particular style of being very literal in a lot of modern lyrics\, but I don’t find any joy in writing like that […] It’s so morose talking about myself all the time.” Growing up\, she found herself drawn to artists such as Kate Bush\, Bjork\, The Rolling Stones and Dusty Springfield: all enigmatic artists whose multi-layered songwriting only added to their allure. “What I’ve discovered through writing this album is\, in a way\, I am still writing about myself\,” she says. “A few themes have come through that really surprised me.” \n \nFollowing the release of Transparent Things\, Ford received huge critical success\, with CLASH Magazine called her a “striking indie it-girl to watch” in an 8/10 review whilst The Line of Best Fit said “Gia Ford’s debut record is a triumph of perseverance\, of artistic integrity\, and of what can happen when you stick to your guns”. Ford has also received additional support from a wealth of titles including NME\, DIY\, WhyNow\, Rolling Stone UK\, Polyester\, and Wonderland\, to name a few. \n \n \nLinks\ngiaford.co.uk \n

SUMMARY:Mama's Broke
DESCRIPTION:For more than a decade\, Mama’s Broke\, the Canadian duo of Amy Lou Keeler and Lisa Maria\, have forged a style carried across landscapes rather than tied to one. \nTheir forthcoming 12-song LP Reunion\, out August 28 via Free Dirt Records and Forward Music Group\, follows years in near-constant motion\, bringing their folk-without-borders approach to small clubs\, DIY spaces\, and everywhere in between. Winners of the Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year for their 2017 debut Count the Wicked\, their music is rooted in long days playing for passing crowds and traveling by foot\, as well as in the deep wells of folk lineage they’ve tapped into across Eastern Canada\, Appalachia\, Ireland\, and beyond. Their sound doesn’t belong to any one place so much as it passes through them\, grounded in the traditions that shaped it. \n \nThat foundation was built long before stages and studio sessions\, in traveling communities where music functioned as both currency and connection. The two met within a global network of musicians funding their way through shared songs\, carrying only what they could as they traded melodies and stories across the miles. Playing for hours at a time on the street demanded a repertoire that could hold attention and sustain emotion\, drawing them deep into traditional material and the discipline of close harmony. Over time\, the songs became a common language\, connecting what came before with the music they were making together. \n \nBuilding on their JUNO-nominated album Narrow Line (2022)\, Reunion reflects a world coming apart in plain sight\, tracing fractured communities\, the erosion of shared ground\, and the growing awareness that the systems we were taught to trust no longer hold or deliver the promises they were meant to keep. The songs don’t preach or prescribe; they reflect\, holding up a mirror and leaving space for something else to take shape. \n \nRecorded just outside Nashville in Goodlettsville\, Tennessee\, Reunion features subtle contributions from bassist Paul Kowert (Gillian Welch & David Rawlings) and others\, adding depth without pulling focus from the record’s acoustic core. At its heart\, Mama’s Broke remains what it has always been: two voices\, intertwined\, both fragile and enduring. Reunion asks what it means to make something that lasts: not a place you’re from\, or even a place you return to\, but what you make together\, and how long it lasts\, if you tend to it. \n \n \nLinks\nmamasbroke.ca \n
